In and around Punta del Este
The making of the first holes of Cantegril Country Golf Club commenced in 1929 on a terrain of 62 hectares of pine trees and eucalyptus at one mile from the coastline however the 18 holes opened in 1947 at the emergency of Punta del Este becoming the hottest vacation place to go for porteños (Argentineans from Buenos Aires) who were disliking Mar del Plata as it grew to be way too cheap and congested.
The golf course is located between maritime trees. The club house is extremely convivial and in the middle of gorgeous flowerbeds. Since this golf course is located at a couple of minutes from the major sites, it is somewhat complicated for people to get tee times throughout the high season (December to March).

The Club de Golf del Lago is not difficult to access: it is situated alongside the road between the airport terminal and the entrance to Punta del Este. This 18 holes championship golf course developed on the undulating wooden slopes of the environment of the Laguna del Sauce stands out as the first course in South America that fulfills the standards of the ISO 14001 for the preservation of the environment .
Out of the commotion of the crowded streets and beaches, it is a fantastic satisfaction to relax and play this glorious golf course undulating among eucalyptus and pine trees the place countless of birds sing and nestle. So if you’re not too loud golfers, you can observe blue herons fishing in the lake between holes 12 to 15. This is certainly truly an amazing golf course even when the raised greens may not be easy to reach in regulation. The club-house is beneath the shade from the trees and offers excellent local cuisine and the 5 star hotel overlooks the lake.

Away from Punta del Este, La Barra Golf Club is also away from La Barra village, lost in the prairies. La Barra Golf Club has an 18-hole course with USGA regulation greens, some trees, and numerous water hazards. The course is playable throughout the year. It has a colonial style club house.

A hidden treasure with ample fairways. Green fee was U$ 50, you can rent golf buggys, electric bag carts or pull carts if you want to walk. The tourists are welcome. The golf course is in the middle of the Uruguay pampas, amazing 360 views. They speak good english, many Anglo expats set up sticks there (and can hit a 1-iron under the wind, a lost art these days)
Value For Money: Good
Dear Matthew,
I value your comment but to which one of the three golf clubs did it refer to?
Cantegril, La Barra or Club del Lago were the three clubs mentioned, which one welcomes tourists and has $50 green fees?
To investliveuruguay,
I appreciate the 3 part article on golf courses in Uruguay but I would have liked to have known which clubs welcome non- members. I suppose the hotels allow their guests to play? Also being retired whenever you can give ball park cost figures it helps. Vacationers would probably enjoy knowing as well since they can then budget that into their trip.
Hello Denise,
Thank you for your comments!
All the clubs in Punta del Este welcome non members.
The green fee at Cantegril Golf Club is US$ 45, the electric carts are US$80 and the driving range is from $140 for 30 balls, $180 for 50 and $300 for 100.
The green fee at Club del Lago Golf is US$ 100.
I will post more info on memberships and green fees later this week.
Take care!
Dear Matthew Richardson,
Thank you for the information on the green fee price and the point that tourists are welcome at this golf course. My only problem is that 3 clubs were mentioned in this part 2 golf series, which club did your comment refer to? Cantegril, Club del Largo and La Barra Golf clubs were all reviewed. Which one referred was the "hidden treasure" that I now want to go to?
Hello Denise,
I was talking about La Barra Golf Club. I just called to check the green fee and it is US$60 and there is also a special for winter, paying this fee of US$400 you can play until the end of November.
Hope this helps!
